Why Should You Use A Managed Services Provider?

Why Should You Use A Managed Services Provider?

This is the 7th in a series of blogs written by Ashton Technology Solutions sales & marketing manager Jim Abbott, as he makes the move from a web services firm to a managed IT solutions firm.

We’ll Keep the Lights on for You

No, Ashton isn’t a motel chain. We’re a managed services provider, and I’m figuring out what that means. I’m also figuring out why small and mid-sized businesses need providers like us, to make them more efficient. A recent survey of IT leaders, by Forrester Research, shows that 72% of IT budgets are used for “keeping the lights on”. That includes replacing and expanding existing capacity, ongoing operations, and maintenance. As such, only 28% of IT budgets go towards new projects and innovation. Outsourcing IT management to a managed services provider like Ashton allows companies to reduce their “keep the lights on” spending, while making their business more efficient.

What is “Managed Services”?

Research firm Gartner writes that “A managed service provider (MSP) delivers network, application, system, and e-management services across a network to multiple enterprises…” That’s the best definition I could find which came from an independent source, and it does a pretty good job of summing up what Ashton does for our MSP clients. Generally speaking, an MSP will act as your company’s IT department, or backup your existing staff. We work both ways, depending on a client’s needs, and while much of our work is reactive, we prefer to be proactive. By staying on top of a client’s needs, and keeping up to date with new technology, regulatory compliance concerns, and security risks (to name a few), we can proactively provide solutions which make your business more efficient, while reducing the possibility of sudden problems.
